Is all my travel eligible for carbon offset?
YES, As long as you book on the FlyGreen.ca website, all confirmed bookings are automatically offset. |
Which organisation is doing the offsetting?
FlyGreen.ca has partnered with Offsetters, a well-known Canadian organization that was established by a team of climate-change experts at the University of British Columbia in 2005.
Offsetters works with individuals and businesses to calculate, track, reduce, and finally offset their greenhouse gas emissions. |
What actually do Offsetters do?
They invest in mainly domestic projects that prevent greenhouse gases from being emitted into the atmosphere through simple, energy-efficient and sustainable projects of renewable energy that would not have taken place without their involvement.
What actually is carbon offset?
A "carbon offset" occurs when an individual or organization emits a given amount of greenhouse gas (GHG) but invests in measures that will pull the equivalent volume of GHG out of the atmosphere or prevent other emissions from taking place at all. Read more about it Here.
How does my offsetting contribute?
With every project, more and more emerging energy-saving systems will become feasible, and by regularly offsetting even a part of your contribution to the increase of GHG emissions, you not only offset your own emissions but also promote the mainstream adoption of alternative energy systems that do not rely on fossil fuels.
By how much do we have to cut GHG emissions?
If we want to stabilise the earth's climate, we need to reduce GHG emissions by over 70%. The Offsetters' projects not only deliver GHG reductions of 70% or more but are economically attractive in the long run and, once established, will be able to sustain themselves. All their projects are verified by third party organizations with no vested interest.
How do I know how much CO2 my flight emits?
A report on the climate impact of aviation by the Environmental Change Institute at Oxford University (Aviation Emissions and Offsets) - uses four factors in its calculations:
- The fuel consumption rate of the aircraft used
- The seats occupied and the amount (weight) of freight on board
- The overall impact of GHG emissions in the stratosphere
- The distance flown
|
Are all carbon offset initiatives more or less the same?
No, certainly not! Right now, voluntary carbon offsets are still an unregulated market and many projects promoted as "offsets" today are not high-quality offset projects.
What is a high-quality carbon offset project?
- It is "additional": enabling projects that would otherwise not take place
- It meets (or exceeds) existing Canadian standards
- It is easily verified by a third party
- It has to provide lasting environmental benefit
- It is socially beneficial

Why is Hume Travel providing this service?
- We think all travel suppliers should offset their carbon footprint and it should be built into their rates. We realize the economicimpact to consumers is still controversial – especially since standards are not consistent
- We wanted to help – but can’t afford to fully offset every trip
- This way both Hume Travel staffers and our clients can be assured that we are helping in our own small way – at least until better stabndards, and more complete offsets are commonplace
- We appreciate your support by booking your travel on FlyGreen.ca so we can both contribute to Help the Earth
